POETIC MEDITATIONS
Beautiful Undoings grants access to “be with” what there truly is to be aware of when you are witnessing race, privilege, grief and love of American racial history stress and violence—no matter what your racial affinity group membership.
May these poetic meditations, photos and recordings water the seeds of True Freedom our nation must experience if ALL lives are to matter and thrive.
Beautiful Undoings: Race, Privilege, Grief and Love is a 52- part series exploring the impacts of American racial history during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. I started writing this series in March 2020 as the impacts of the pandemic mightily affected my family and community.
These poetic meditations intensified as Black Spring erupted in our nation’s cities and around the world as hearts burst in outrage over George Floyd’s urban lynching by the police. Civil unrest and collective support for Black Lives Matter dominated the news cycle and the old threadbare ideals and empty analysis of what was really at work in our nation sickened me.
What also became clear was that as I sought stillness and equanimity in my own practice, through chanting, insight meditation practices and seeking the healing power of creative fertility through God the Mother; sharing these poetic meditations in small groups, 1:1 sessions and BIPOC gatherings and allyship trainings; participants were deeply moved, accessing implicit realms of suffering and impact which gave rise to soothing spaciousness. It became abundantly clear that these poems were not for me alone. That a practice of “explicit unlearning” of American racial history through poetry, insight meditations speaking directly to what was witnessed, feltseen and heard on and in black forms needed to be offered for others to release and begin healing in order to do the work that must be done to free our nation in both individual mental states and collective consciousness.
